The Yankees bullpen a year ago was one of the most dominate in the game helping the team end their two year playoff drought the bullpen was led by Delin Betances who posted a 1.50 ERA and struck out 131 batters in 2015 earning his second all star nods in two years in the big leagues, and last year’s closer Andrew Miller closed out 36 of his 38 opportunities posting a 2.04 ERA, striking out 100 batters, and taking home the Mariano Rivera award given out each year to the best reliever of the American League.
Now the Yankees will add the flame throwing Chapman who has an electric fastball that can sometimes be unhittable. His 106 MPH pitch vs the Pirates in 2011 was the fastest pitch ever recorded in the history of major league baseball.
Chapman has made it to four straight all star games has posted a career 2.17 ERA, and 146 career saves still at the age of 27. In 2015 Chapman was dominate posting a 1.63 ERA, striking out 116 batters, and closing 33 out of his 36 opportunities.
With a backend of the bullpen that has three of the best relievers in the sport the New York Yankees sure will put pressure on opponents to get to their starting pitchers. If theYankees hold the lead after 6 innings the Yankees should be able to lock up games with ease.
As for who will be the closer all three men are capable which may lead to Joe Girardi using a closer by committee strategy choosing which one of his big late inning arms is the freshest, and best suited against the lineup they will be up against.
No matter who is closing out games in the Bronx in 2016 it will be one of three best relievers in the sport making a Yankees team who scored the second most runs in the majors a year ago a very dangerous team in the AL East now with a bullpen that can really shorten games.
Expect the trio of Betances, Miller, and Chapman to help the Yankees win a lot of ball games in the 2016 season.
