East Rutherford- For the first time since 2013 the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday by a final score of 28-23 to improve to 5-3 on the season. The win gave the Giants sole possession of second place in the NFC East, as well as the NFC’s first Wild Card spot. In a game where the Giants opened up a 14-0 lead in the first quarter they still had to fight hard for a victory. Despite never trailing Rookie Carson Wentz kept the Eagles in the game but never was able to get the big touchdown as the Eagles fell to 4-4 on the season after a season that started off 3-0.
The game could not have started better for Big Blue. Landon Collins who has proved he may just be a top five safety got the Giants started with yet another interception. The Giants cashed in on the second play after the turnover as Eli Manning hit Odell Beckham JR on a slant route and the rest was history. Beckham flew past the Eagles defense for a 26 yard Touchdown putting New York up 7-0. Quickly after Carson Wentz made another rookie mistake. He threw his second pick in as many drives this one to undrafted rookie out of UCON Andrew Adams. Eli Manning was quick to cash in yet again as he hit another undrafted rookie Wide Out Rodger Lewis out of Bowling Green in the end zone for a 30 yard score as New York quickly opened up a 14-0 lead.
Carson Wentz would get his act together pretty quickly. He raced the Eagles down the field setting up a field goal to push the score to 14-3. The Eagles quickly drove back down the field but at the Giants 23 yard line Eagles Head Coach Doug Pederson decided to keep the offense on the field rather than kick the field goal. The move would back fire as Snacks Harrison, and Janoris Jenkins got to Carson Wentz on a Quarterback Draw that went backwards for a loss of four.
After a Giants punt the Eagles quickly made up for the mistake on their previous drive. A three play drive highlighted by a 58 yard Wentz hook up to rookie Wide Out Bryce Treggs was caped off with a eight yard Ryan Mathews Touchdown. Making the score 14-10 in the Second Quarter.
The Giants would respond. Eli Manning led a 86 yard drive which saw a 45 yard completion to Victor Cruz which set the Giants up in the red zone. Eli Manning would find that man Odell Beckham JR again. Beckham caught a one yard jump ball in the end zone for his second score of the game giving the Giants a 21-10 lead
Which they would take into halftime thanks to a pair of Eagles mistakes. This time having fourth and one at the Giants six yard line the Eagles went for it on Fourth again. Again the move back fired. Snacks Harrison, and Kelvin Sheppard bottled up Sproles well short of the first leading to a turnover on downs.
Before the half the Eagles finally went for the points a 40 yard try was blocked. Jason Pierre Paul blocked every last bit of it the kick was scooped up by Janoris Jenkins. The Giants were unable to add on before the half as the teams went into the locker room with New York up 11 (21-10).
The Eagles opened the half with a quick 70 yard touchdown drive. The drive was capped off with a three yard touchdown drive by Kenjon Barner. The Eagles cut the Giant lead to 21-17
Again however the Giants would respond. Eli Manning led a 10 play 75 yard drive to the end zone. The big play of the drive ended up in six points for New York. Sterling Sheppard who was held on the play slipped free as Eli Manning hit the rookie out of Oklahoma in the end zone for a 32 yard Touchdown putting the Giants back up by 11 leading 28-17.
After trading punts the Eagles got the ball back and capped off a seven minute, 26 second drive that moved the game into Fourth Quarter with a 26 yard Caleb Sturgis Field Goal cutting the Giants lead to 28-20.
Eli Manning made his first mistake on the Giants ensuing drive as Nolan Carroll wrestled the football away from Beckham JR picking Manning off. Luckily for New York Carson Wentz and the Eagles were unable to cash in as they went three and out punting the ball back to the Giants.
After a Giants three and out the Eagles got the ball back with Seven Minutes and three seconds left in the ballgame. Wentz lead the Eagles down the field setting up Sturgis again from 38 yards to cut the Giants lead to five at 28-23.
With just a Minute, and fifty five seconds left the Giants needed one first down to seal the deal as the Eagles were down to their final time out. That’s when the unthinkable happened. Eli Manning’s pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and picked off by Jordan Hicks setting up the Eagles with a timeout, at the Giants 34 yard line, and a Minute 48 seconds.
After a 17 yard hookup to Nelson Agholor the Eagles were setup at the 17 yard line. That’s where the Giants defense locked down. Wentz threw four straight incomplete passes turning the ball over on downs sealing a third straight win for New York.
The Giants improved to 5-3 on the season, as the Eagles fell to 4-4. Up next for the Giants Monday Night Football at MetLife where they will take on the 3-4-1 Bengals. The Eagles will try to get their season back on track at home VS the Falcons.
